The way HR policies are written is central to their effectiveness. Problems with clarity, comprehensiveness, and cultural alignment will result in misinterpretation and non-compliance. Use this storyboard to evaluate how your policies are written to help ensure they meet their objectives.

Specifically, this storyboard will:

  • Highlight the specific ways that policies can be written poorly.
  • Explain all of the costs associated with poorly written policies.
  • Walk you through the building blocks of effective policy writing, including:
    • Establishing the purpose of the policy.
    • Identifying for whom the policy is being written.
    • Directions for where to locate the information required to write the policy.
    • Identifying appropriate policy components.
    • Following language guidelines to ensure the policy is clear and concise.
  • Provide advice on how to obtain appropriate policy review once the policy has been drafted.
  • Calculate the amount of effort that will be required (in hours) to create or revise policies.

Use this storyboard to guide your policy writing and revising.
