What is Microsoft Power Query?
Power Query is a data transformation and data preparation engine. Power Query comes with a graphical interface for getting data from sources and a Power Query Editor for applying transformations. Because the engine is available in many products and services, the destination where the data will be stored depends on where Power Query was used. Using Power Query, you can perform the extract, transform, and load (ETL) processing of data.

Where Excel Gets Its Data Groove On!
Likeliness to Recommend
What differentiates Microsoft Power Query from other similar products?
It hooks straight into Excel, Teams, SharePoint, SQL databases, whatever our data lives in. Once you’ve built a transformation, you can save it, reuse it, and trust it to run the same way every time. That consistency is the first thing I appreciate.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
One thing that gets chatter around the office is how much grunt you can get without writing lines of code. You point and click transformations, filter columns, unpivot, merge tables… you end up with ready-for-analysis data without needing a full script. This has been brilliant for our business analysts, who can take charge of their own datasets without waiting for the BI team to intervene.
What do you dislike most about this product?
Some of the UI elements feel a bit old school, and when you start chaining dozens of applied steps, it’s easy to lose track of what’s happening.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
Power Query has genuinely cut down on grunt work. What used to be hours of manual cleaning is now a few clicks, scheduled refreshes and automated uploads. I tell peers that if you’re swimming in inconsistent input files and need something reliable without over-engineering a custom pipeline, this is your best friend. Trust me, once you see a weekly pain point disappear, you’ll be sold.
Pros
- Continually Improving Product
- Performance Enhancing
- Enables Productivity
- Trustworthy

Likeliness to Recommend
What differentiates Microsoft Power Query from other similar products?
Using Power Query reduced manual copy-paste errors in reports significantly. Power Query helps ensure consistency across teams. While many tools require coding skills, Power Query lets me visually shape, clean, and combine data without writing complex scripts.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
It keeps my messy data clean without writing complex formulas or scripts. Power Query saves me hours by automating repetitive data preparation tasks effortlessly. I find Power Query extremely helpful when combining data from multiple inconsistent files. The interface feels logical and guides me naturally through each transformation step.
What do you dislike most about this product?
I find the debugging errors to be a little frustrating, because error messages are often vague and don’t clearly explain what went wrong or how to fix it.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
I recommend it for collaborative analytics environments. It enhances analytics reliability. Before diving in, identify the specific data problems you want Power Query to solve, like cleaning inconsistent data or merging multiple sources.
