Once current and potential leaders have been assessed, supervisors should draw up a development action plan with them so that they may improve their leadership skills, thus increasing their chances of promotion.

  • Conduct a gap analysis to identify which leadership competencies need the most improvement for future leadership roles in the organization.
  • Assess the level of effort required to improve gap leadership competencies.
  • Create a specific plan to pursue leadership competencies identified for development, including timelines for development actions.

Employees and their supervisors should review the Leadership Development Action Plan every quarter or semi-annually to ensure the appropriate steps are taken to improve leadership capabilities.
