How did you get your start in HR?
I started my career focused on the more technical and analytical side of HR, in HRIS and compensation and benefits. My first HR role was in the technology space as a member of a global HRIS implementation team, where I had the opportunity to develop and deliver training to HRIS superusers from across North America and Europe. I later had the opportunity to get involved in, and subsequently lead, the compensation and benefits functions for both national and international organizations. As I gained more experience in different functional areas, I found my passion in the broader aspects of HR, particularly in how HR can drive business success through strategic partnerships and by enhancing employee experience. This led me to take on leadership roles with a focus on talent management program development and become a trusted advisor and strategic business partner to senior leadership.
What does your role as Executive Advisor involve? What drew you to it?
I was drawn to this role by the opportunity to leverage my HR experience to help leaders impact their organizations. I have used data-driven insights and my understanding of business needs to help leaders support the creation of environments where people can thrive and drive business success. The Executive Advisor role allows me to do this on a larger scale with many organizations by partnering with members to develop strategies and implement plans aligned with their business goals. My role provides me with the opportunity to act as a trusted advisor. By asking questions, understanding challenges, and focusing on objectives, I actively guide members to best leverage McLean & Company resources to help achieve their goals.
What do you do to take care of yourself?
I focus on balancing work and my personal life. I spend quality time with my family and enjoy activities like cooking, staying active through fitness, walking, and paddleboarding, and listening to podcasts on a variety of topics. I also enjoy being involved in community and volunteer activities.
What advice do you have for someone starting out as an HR leader?
My advice for someone starting out as an HR leader is to focus on building strong internal and external relationships. Also, understanding the business that you support and using that knowledge to align HR strategies with organizational goals is key. Leverage data to inform your decisions and remember that that data includes listening to your people. Stay curious and keep learning – being ready to adapt will help you drive impact.
